BlackBerry planning a wrap-around concept phone?

blackberry_concept2I always like seeing what is new with cellular phones. Considering all of them have touchscreens and are shying away from buttons, it makes you wonder if we have done everything as far as cell phones are concerned.

Then designer John Anastasiadis comes up with this BlackBerry Wrap-around BB concept. I’m not really certain how this works, but I believe that we are soon to be in an age where foldable or bendable displays will be on every phone. That tech has been under development for years.

I’m not certain how this BlackBerry wraparound phone would work. I mean, would you flick programs that you wanted to keep open to the spine? Perhaps the spine works like the menu bar at the bottom of my computer.

I suppose that there is one side of the phone devoted to apps your are running, and then the other side with apps running in the background?

Personally, I would love to try a phone like this. I’m not certain what place BlackBerry has in the iOS/Android world, but I’m guessing that it could use a little more innovation in the smartphone marketplace.

Is the iPad 3 on its way?

ipadAccording to AllThingsD, there is a new version of iPad is coming. Yeah, you can imagine how big this news is. Normally when Apple makes an announcement it’s like the biggest tech news of the day.

In this case, all I really have is the AllThingsD source, but I believe it says that Apple isn’t having a big formal announcement in February, but they are planning their big shindig announcement in March, and its probably the third generation Apple tablet.

This would correspond to the release of the iPad 2 one year ago. Here’s what we know so far: the iPad 3 will have a dual-core CPU with a higher resolution display. It is also rumored to have a faster chip, improved graphics processor, a 2048×1536 Retina Display.

Of course, Apple has not commented on whether or not this is true. i guess we’ll wait until March to find out.

Pentax unveils the Optio WG-2 family of cameras

wg-2What you are seeing here is a new family of cameras from Pentax known as the Optio WG-2, a follow-up to their WG-1 series revealed one year ago.

As you might have guessed, these cameras are pretty rugged. They are waterproof up to 40 feet, and they are shock-resistant and dustproof.

They essentially have the same design, but they also have some other interesting features like a 16-megapixel, back illuminated CMOS sensor, 1080p (30fps) movie mode, and a micro-HDMI port. The viewer is a 3-inch job.

If you want them, be prepared to pay about $350 for them, but you will have to pay an extra $50 with GPS. Sadly, my Source does not have a release date.

Boston Dynamics AlphaDog taken for an outdoor walk

2-8-2011rightls3originaljpg2What you are seeing to the right here is the AlphaDog, a project from Boston Dynamics that is also known as the LS3 (Legged Squad Support System). This is a military experiment from our friends at DARPA, and it is what you think it is, a walking robot.

I believe that the purpose of the AlphaDog is to essentially do the heavy lifting of ground-based soldiers. I can’t help but think of the movie Starship Troopers, and how there were ground troops on uninhabitable planets that were full of insects who wanted nothing more than to kill humans. And why did we not just nuke the planet from above? It really is the only way to be sure.

Anyway, the AlphaDog is really something out of science fiction that resembles a robot horse of some kind. You can watch a video after the jump of the AlphaDog in action, and it handle itself pretty well outside. It does stumble a bit on some terrain, and it certainly is loud. If someone does intend to use the AlphaDog for military applications, then you should know that all that noise would most certainly give away its position.
