There is a secretive company known as Magic Leap which is supposed to be valued at $4.5 billion, and yet the company has not revealed its product. I’m not even certain what it is, but it looks like some kind of virtual reality or augmented reality headset.
This is a design patent given for Magic Leap, and it looks like some kind of bike helmet, doesn’t it? That, or Space Ranger’s helmet. You know, I almost don’t feel like explaining the reference to a DC science fiction hero, but it is a sign that we are living in an age of science fiction that has become science fact.
There is apparently a design patent that you see here, but it is not set in stone. In fact, my Source says that this isn’t the first time a Magic Leap patent has surfaced, so whether or not this is true remains to be seen.
You know all those movies that take place in the future, where every city looks all dystopian and future-y? Well, in the future, you won’t find this invisible train.
Actually, you might. This is a Japanese train-travel company Seibu railway, and the idea is to develop a fast commuter train that can blend in the landscape.
I don’t think that this will be one of those things like the invisible car like in Die Another Day (which was utterly ridiculous, by the way). However, I like the idea of creating some kind of artificial cloak of invisibility. This is all really a design with some “semi-reflective surface”, and it helps it blend in.
In other words, the future might look like something that can blend into nature, rather than something that is gray and concrete, something that looks like an aberation of nature.
So forget that Blade Runner dream of the future, because it takes place in 2019 anyway. Instead, think…I don’t know, I don’t think there is any futuristic movie that doesn’t see the future as some seriously bleak dystopian place.
This is an interesting development for science that involves glass. You know the problem of how it is transparent, imagine if it just wasn’t.
Now, there is turnable glass that uses nanocrystals and metallic nanostructures, but it is pretty costly. That could change as Professor David Clarke and Samuel Shian at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences are working on a cheaper method for opaque and clear glass.
How does it work? It uses a sheet of glass sandwiched between two sheets of clear, soft elastomer, then a coating of silver nanowires. Then all it takes is a strong enough current to turn the window opaque.
It is probably a good to make certain that these scientists perfect their process before this gets into every house, but it will be interesting to see what the world will be like without blinds. After that, it will be curtains for curtains.
Yeah, that was the best that I can come up with. Still, it is some great technology, isn’t it?
So, I think we all know that technology is changing so much, that I can’t tell what the next car will look like. BMW has that vision covered with the Vision Next 100 concept car which is a Car of the Future, for today.
So, what does car of the future look like? Well, it is set up for autonomous driving. It has what is called Ease Mode, which can retract the steering wheel and can move the seat around for autonomous driving. I guess in the future, all cars will become limos.
This BMW Vision 100 has some AI called the “Companion” which is some kind of orb that can communicate information to pedestrians when the car is in self-driving mode. This orb will grow green when pedestrians can safely cross in front of it.
There is also a feature known as “Alive Geometry” that describes helpful information flowing from the dashboard to the connected windshield. Yes, this is a place where a a windshield is a computer screen, so you can surf the net while your car drives itself.
Yes, this is the future. I don’t know if this is the Vision Next 100 will be for the next 100 years, but we will see.
Okay, every once in a while, I see some kind of new device that I think is going to change the world. I think LG has already seen it.
We have been living in a world where the smartphone has been just a touchscreen with very few buttons. We obviously have Apple to thank for that, but what is the next step? After all, it is very clear that those old flip phones from a decade ago look like dinosaurs versus the plain touchscreen smartphones of today.
So what will be the next step? How about some kind of small bar for notifications, and then a pullout screen for watching movies? Yeah, I really want that, and you know who else wants that? LG.
LG has planned on investing about $907 million for a new OLED plant in Korea. The plant should be up and running in about 2017, which can produce four times as many flexible OLED displays compared to what they can do now.
Seriously, those OLED touchscreens are the way of the future man. I think I might need to get me some idea of what this is going. Maybe I should invest in LG Electronics before the stock climbs after their flexible touchscreen phones come out.
It seems like big companies like Samsung always have some stuff going on, and it is difficult to keep track of the innovation. Some probably doesn’t see the light of day, such as this foldable tablet.
Apparently, this technology has been around since November 2013, but the Korean Intellectual Property Office has just published it just recently. This is Patent No. 30-0757696, and it is a foldable tablet from Samsung with two seams and a flexible display.
Yeah, that whole flexible display hasn’t been invented yet, but it really ought to be. I don’t know if Samsung really wants to put this out, but man, they really should.
Yesterday, I was trying to see if I could cover some new products, and on April Fool’s Day, you’ll usually see some joke products. I thought that the Amazon Dash was one of them.
One of my Sources says that this is real. The Amazon Dash is a one click shopping method that involves no logging on whatsoever. Basically, it is a button that you can push to order things that you need, when you discover that you need them. For example, if you are needing some Bounty paper towels, just push the button and you have an Amazon ship you that item.
Okay, personally, I see this as a way of making your life easier, but it is also a way for corporations to place their names all over your house. Some have been critical of the Amazon Dash become of that, and I will have to agree. Also, I think there needs to be a limit on this because if you have kids, then you know how they love to push buttons. Maybe there is a max-out button or something.
I have no idea how much this service will become available, or when it will be available. Maybe by the time Amazon has its drone delivery program.
What you are seeing here in this man’s hand is the Runcible, and it is created by someone name Monohm who is wanting to create the “anti-smartphone”. I guess the best way to describe it is somewhere in between a wearable and a smartphone.
After all, smartwatches are wearables that give you a ton of notifications, and then you can actually do something about them on your smartphone or tablet. The Runcible is actually designed to do all this on one device, as it runs on Mozilla’s Firefox OS platform and allows the user to make calls, ask for directions, or browse the web. It can support both LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC.
Yes, it is round and fits in your hand, taking a cue from a pocketwatch rather than a calculator. Yeah, I couldn’t think of a better illustration for that, but my source states that “just to hold it is calming”. By the way, it is designed to be extremely flexible as well as easily upgradeable, and “electric heirloom” if you will. Man, this Runcible really makes me re-think a lot of what I know about technology.
So does the Runcible have a future? It looks like it, as it has financial backing form KDDI, the Japanese carrier. Will something like this ever catch on? Well, let’s just say that if the steampunk age ever met the digital age, then everyone would have a Runcible.
Every once in a while, I see a review of a product that I may never get a chance to try myself, and today it is the Sprout PC. It is a one-piece PC that could easily create a standard.
Sprout is a 23-inch touchscreen that has Windows 8.1, 8 gigabytes of memory, and a terabyte hard drive. In addition to the wireless mouse and keyboard, it has a 20-inch mat. The mat locks with the touchscreen and it is an extension of the touchscreen.
Why is that important? Maybe it is because the Sprout has a projector that can shine on the mat so you can use it as a touchscreen. The mat can be used as a scanner, and there is even an attachment to make this a 3-D scanner as well. Then there is a stylus and lots of apps.
Now, this was a review from David Pogue, who is a famous gadget reviewer. He says that “in its 1.0 version, it’s teetering on the brink of failure”. I would not mind having this in my own home, and take it on the road myself.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the future! It is an invisible plane, just like the one that Wonder Woman flies. Actually, it is only invisible on the inside, as you can see on the video above.
Seriously, it is not. However, this plane has some kind of touchscreen technology on the walls that allows the user to see outside the walls. Not only do you get quite a view, but you can use the touchscreen to summon a flight attendant or something.
It might not be good for those who have a fear of heights, but it is good because it allows the plane to get rid of windows. You might not think that is much, but according to CPI, the company that makes this tech, eighty percent of an aircraft’s weight is due to fuel and the weight itself. If you can remove the windows, then you have “an approximate 0.75% fuel saving for every 1% reduction in weight”
Here is another application of see-through technology. This car that you see here has a camera in back. Then it has a projector on the inside to show what is going on behind the backseat, outside of the car. Okay, I don’t think this will work well if there is someone in the backseat, but it is an interesting concept.
Perhaps that whole reason I like this is because I like the whole concept of see-through tech. This is one of those technologies that is cool, but I honestly don’t think will catch on.
