In case you haven’t seen the last James Bond film Skyfall, it features a scene with the new Q. New because it is the first time in the new Daniel Craig Bond film series that we have seen him. As it turns out, Q is quite young and doesn’t really do any exploding pens or other tricky spy stuff.
Q does create a gun that can only fire for one particular user. I’m pretty certain it is not a spoiler alert to say that this special gun is the villain’s undoing. Considering that most James Bond’s gadgets are introduced and then just sit around just waiting to be used, it just make sense, doesn’t it?
Right now, there is an Indiegogo project known as Safe Gun Technology that will do essentially the same thing as the Skyfall gun. The tech works with a biometric fingerprint recognition in order to prevent unauthorized users from firing a gun. This is quite important because most gun crimes are committed with stolen guns or simply guns that are not ones own.
This would require a gun to built with the safety mechanism. This Safe Gun tech would render the gun useless if it is tampered with.
This is an Indiegogo project, which means it takes your money to make it work. Right now, the company is looking for about $50,000, and this is to create a decent prototype.
I honestly think these smart-guns are probably the way to go. If you saw the 1998 movie Lost In Space, you will encounter guns that will only fire for certain users. I wondered if this was the inspiration for Kenneth Collins, a construction worker who is attempting to pioneer this smart gun. As it turns out, he was moved by the tragedy of Columbine in 1999.
You can find out more information about the Smart tech here, and pledge a donation if you like.
