I can’t believe that my Sources didn’t use The Lord of the Rings metaphor, but it seems pretty obvious. The Plastic is a device that I think solves an obvious problem: wallets are made too thick by credit and debit cards, and it just makes sense to put them in one place.
Not only is the Plastic good for credit and debit cards, but it can also store funds for certificates as well. In case you are wondering how the Plastic switches from card to card, it is because there is a chip in it that will sync with a smartphone app. When it comes time to pay, you can go through the e-ink screen and toggle through your payment cards at the counter.
Here’s another bonus feature of the Plastic. If the card is separated from your phone, it will remotely wipe your data. This is good in case your card gets lost or stolen, but the card still flashes a message on the back in case someone finds your cards and is willing to return it.
This is an interesting idea for payment, and we are definitely going to see new ways for money to get transferred these days. Apple has its Apple Pay, and I have heard that Samsung could be working with PayPal on some new payment system as well.
The plan is to get the Plastic out to the public by 2015 but I don’t have an exact date, and it can be pre-ordered from the Plastic website for about $155.
