I can understand if you haven’t heard of this film, as it just came out this year. I can’t remember what Source I read, but one said that Advantageous is the best science-fiction movie this year. Once I discovered that it was on Netflix, I decided to check it out for myself.

I have to say that this indie film looks bigger than I thought it would be. It is one of those films that is very cerebral, and requires the audience to really listen to know what is going on. In fact, I am not certain on certain things on this film. Normally, when I see a film and don’t understand certain plot points, I go to Wikipedia and read the plot summary to make certain that I heard it right. In this case, the film has very little on Advantageous but a cast list and other short info.

Advantageous takes place in the future in a city that looks…futuristic. It has those big giant towers, but it doesn’t go out of its way to show how dystopian it is. This isn’t Blade Runner, but it has the subtlety of Interstellar. That is, the world is in a bad place, but everyone is kind of in denial of how bad things really are.

Okay, so here’s what I think is going on. In the future, there isn’t a lot of jobs for women. Now, I don’t really see any reason why in the world women are unemployed. This film doesn’t have any text crawls at the beginning, so you have to see what they are showing rather than telling. Now, there are these age-reduction procedures that are happening, and I can’t help but think that this type of technology would lead to increased population, which would reduce the number of jobs. I’m not certain if I was supposed to think that, though.

Also, there is a scene where the main character, Gwen, is talking on the phone, and she suddenly realizes that she is talking to a machine. So maybe machines are taking women’s jobs?

I don’t know. The point is that the main character Gwen is losing her job, and she can’t give her daughter a good education and future. The only thing that Gwen can do is be the spokesperson for a new type of treatment. This treatment changes her as an actress, but other things have changed as well.

I think the point of this movie is to show how society changes, and how we change with it, but when we do, we lose part of ourselves. At least, this is what I think this is saying. Most films should concentrate on not saying their theme rather than be preachy, which Christians err on a lot.

This film looks beautiful but also sad. This one building has this statue that is also a fountain, and I could watch that shot of it all day.

This film has an odd subplot that I thought was going to go somewhere but was one big…is it blue herring or red herring? Anyway, certain buildings blow up, and some terrorists take credit. Apparently, this happens so often, that characters don’t react like they should when explosions occur.

There is also this drone that flies around the city, maybe a few of them. Perhaps the budget could only afford one. There is a close-up shot of the drone and it looks like there is a camera eye on this drone. So is this a representative of Big Brother? There is no explanation of this.

So what is up with these pseudo-plotlines? I don’t know. I won’t spoil the ending, but I think I see what it is supposed to say. I actually don’t want to even say what the theme was, because I believe the viewer is supposed to get what they can from it.
