It seems like every time I get a chance to play the Wii U, I always have to wait in line for a way long time. More time then I am willing to wait, as it were. This was not the case at PAX, where I was able to walk up to the Nintendo booth and get an idea of what it is like to play the Wii U.
For those who don’t know about the Wii U, it has a touchscreen on it, a first for just about any controller, that I know of. I suppose that Nintendo brought this in to be similar to mobile game playing on smartphones and tablets.
I had a chance to play two games on the Wii U. One of them was Zombie U, a new game from Ubisoft. Yes, it is one of those zombie/survival games, and I discovered that the dual joysticks were very similar to that on the Xbox 360 or PS3. There are some bumpers and side triggers on the sides, similar to these other controllers.
Yes, it looks like the Wii U went for the best of both worlds when it came to making a new video game controller. I found that in both of these games, it was required that I scan the area, and so I had to manipulate the screen to see certain things. This enabled the screen to become like a second sight, which I thought was very interesting.
This also made the game a lot more complicated. I suppose that some will find this good, and I believe that I might be one of them. I realize that some might get frustrated with this new feature. There was a time when I was playing Batman: Arkham City and I could not hit a button with a batarang. The person at the booth was very patient.
My final analysis is this: Nintendo went out of their way to make a less-complicated gaming controller for the Wii, but now they seem to have gone the other direction with the Wii U. I noticed that the games are less family oriented.
I still want the system, and I really can’t wait to see what new version of the Legend of Zelda will eventually come with it. As it were, they do have a Super Mario Brothers for the Wii U.
