I suppose that we are all looking forward to an age where bionics will allow us to replace missing limbs with mechanical ones, like what we have envisioned in science fiction.
Sure, cyborgs are a reality, but it is a little difficult to create an arm that can be controlled by the mind itself. A landmark has just recently been achieved as Jan Scheuermann used the power of mind to feed herself chocolate.
The video is a year in the making as it took Scheuermann months to simply move the arm, and then longer to manipulate it. You can watch the video after the jump to see her actual actions.
You may notice that there is a lot of heavy things attached to Scheuermann’s head, so I think we are a long way from a mind controlled robot arm. As one who is currently trying to build an arm with Lego Technic pieces, I can tell you that human limbs are the most complex of machines.
Well, I can honestly say that I cannot wait to see what the future brings with this technology. I suppose that we will see.
