FaceCake at ShowStoppers, CES 2013

January 9, 2013 By Techno_Mark Leave a Comment

Last night I attended a CES event known as ShowStoppers, and a lot of companies put their best foot forward for the press. One of them had a strange name called FaceCake, and I wasn’t certain if it was a tech company or a desert.

I was definitely glad I stopped by, as FaceCake makes some seriously cool augmented retail. This is what the company calls their process, and it is essentially a way of using augmented reality to create a virtual dressing room. I have discussed similar technology with a device called a Magic Mirror.

Hopefully the video can explain what FaceCake does, but allow me to talk about my own experience. I stood in front of a camera and a Kinect, and I could see a screen before me. If I held up my left hand, I could select from an article of clothing which includes a scarf, jacket, even a handbag. If I held up my right hand, I can select from a type clothing like a color.

Once the article of clothing is selected, it appears right on me. I can even turn, and the clothes are there. Just to let you know, it wasn’t in sync. I tried on a tie, and it appeared a little lower on my neck than I liked. I did a good Rodney Dangerfield impersonation, though. It is cool that I can pretend that I am holding a handbag and even change sides by bringing my hands together. I saw that this tech worked very well in another screen for make-up. It did a good job of changing colors for lipstick.

Clearly, this tech is the way of the future dressing room, possibly eliminating the space for dressing rooms entirely. Whatever the case, it is quite neat, and what I attend CES to see.
