Can anyone tell me how many satellites are floating in space above the earth now? I have no idea if our planet looks like a space garbage dump as shown in the opening of WALL-E. I have no idea how these satellites keep from hitting each other, or what happens when they give out.
Titan Aerospace has proposed this particular method of telecommunication. These are solar-powered drones that circle the globe at 65,000 feet. These 164 foot wings have solar panels that absorb the sun, so the drone can stay in the air for the night.
Of course, the satellite will eventually give out, so it is fortunate that these winged drones can land on their own. By the way, the drone can cover an area of 17,000 miles, which is good enough to replace one hundred cell phone towers.
I suppose it will be a while before these will replace satellites. It will be a cheaper era for telecommunication then.
