Our Hands-on Review of the SimpleScan SP Simplex

August 7, 2013 By Techno_Mark Leave a Comment

Snapscan simplex 1I did a recent review of an item where I liked the product, but the PR person who gave it to me seemed to think that I didn’t. I went ahead and changed any wording on the review so it was more positive, but the PR person was not satisfied, even going so far as to ask me to remove the review entirely. For the sake of anonymity, I won’t say what the product was, and this is why I bring this up:

I like the SimpleScan SP Simplex. I really do. Now, this is a hands-on review, so I am going to say a few things that I had troubles with when I used it. I can honestly say that these obstacles were overcome, and I will tell you how to overcome them so you can use this scanner which I highly recommend.

I found that the set up of this scanner was interesting, and I thought it was going to be something that it isn’t. This was my fault that I assumed it was this thing. I have used a scanner similar to the Simplex, and it didn’t require me to connect it to my computer. Yes, you can’t use an SD Card or USB thumb drive on this scanner, but you can do a lot.

Now, I have never seen a device that required me to create an account before I could even use it, but the Simplex did. Seriously, when I connected the Simplex to my computer via USB, there was no indicator light to show that it was working. I had to set up an account, but it appears to be free. Once you got the account set up, the indicator light comes on and you can scan at will.

simplescan simplex 2Now, when I got the Simplex, it had some small piece of paper in there that I had to remove before it could work. I was having troubles with it, but then I was able to scan horizontally and vertically. Yes, you can scan vertically, which gives you a lot more room on your desk.

Now, you really have to put the paper in straight to get a scan, and so you don’t want to just willy-nilly put your paper in. I don’t know how that relates to other scanners, but you can always try this again if you mess it up.

Document captureBy the way, the scan is monochromatic, at first. It defaulted to black and white, which I have never seen before. It is easy to adjust the settings to color. There is a sample of a scan here, from a flyer that came to me with the myKeyO.

See? For every problem that I have brought up, I have stated the easily implementable solution.

Once you get the account and scanner working, it is easy to scan a document, put it on Dropbox or some other cloud service, and you can even see it on your smartphone or tablet if you have the right app.

This is an awesome product, and considering that every house needs a scanner these days, you might as well get a SimpleScan Simplex. The Simplex costs $159.00, but if you want something that can scan two sides, you might want to get the Duplex for $199. You can get them here on the SimpleScan site.
