Generally, I try and avoid interjecting my own opinion into my blog postings. Today, I have something that I want to see get off of the ground. Someone is trying to revive Robotech.
If you are not familiar with Robotech, it was an animated series from Japan that was imported to America around the mid-80’s. It was actually a three-part story within its eighty-or-so episodes, but the gag is that these were actually three separate series. Yeah, the editors managed to cut-and-paste three different stories into one.
There was Robotech, The Macross Saga, about a young tyro pilot named Rick Hunter and a city-sized starship called The Macross. Then there was Robotech Masters, a show about a group of mech warriors trying to stop an alien invasion. Then there was Robotech: The Next Generation, which took place after the aliens invaded, with a small band of survivors.
Robotech was probably the first mainstream anime series, and it was so different from the toy commercial cartoons that were out at the time. Granted, the Robotech series spawned its toy line, and why shouldn’t it? Star Wars had toys because it proved it was a good movie, but most films or planned franchises try to get in the toys too early.
Anyway, a Kickstarter project is underway to raise $500,000 for what would be for a pilot episode. It will be interesting to see what they do with the Robotech universe, as the story, detailed as it was, was sort of thrown together. Head over here to see if you want to donate. In the meantime, I’m going to check out Knights of Sidonia on Netflix, as that looks like an anime series I can watch now.
