Speculative Fiction Saturday: Monsters University

September 21, 2013 By Techno_Mark Leave a Comment

Monsters UniversityIt seems that I have been targeting subjects that have been in the news for one reason or the other. I suppose I was trying to make a story with last week’s Left Behind, as I can’t understand why in the world I didn’t hear about Nicolas Cage being in a Left Behind movie months ago.

I have recently heard that Pixar has cancelled their animated movie for 2014, which is a shame. Pixar really needs to get back in the game. They haven’t made a good movie since Up, because they have forgotten about the original storytelling that is so needed in cinema, especially for the young. Wreck-it Ralph was about the best I have seen, but that was by Disney’s animation studio. It appears that Pixar just rehashes their popular franchises, like 2001’s Monster’s Inc with 2013’s Monster’s University.

Okay, let’s start with the title. Mike and Sulley work for Monster’s Inc. and they have now apparently gone to Monsters University. Does anyone thing the naming of this is stupid? This would be like calling a business “Humans, Inc.” or a college “People University”.

I don’t know if I call this film Speculative Fiction, or maybe just a bunch of interesting CG stuff. This is about Mike and Sulley going to college to be scarers, and it is the studio’s first prequel.

The film is about Mike and Sulley entering college and trying to fit in to the culture. For some reason, the evil dean wants to kick Mike and Sulley out, but if they win this competition amongst fraternites and sororities, they will be back in.

The film is essentially like a college comedy, only without any sexuality or nudity. Yeah, this is about as specific as I can get. There is even an evil dean in the story, who is the best character. She is played by Helen Mirren, and is a cross between a gargoyle and a centipede.

The film is all about teamwork, which Pixar has been really preachy about. It is fun to watch, but there is hardly anything original in it. That’s all I can really say about it.
