Companies have been coming up with creative ways to make deliver power to all the gadgets in our homes that require electricity. Allocacoc is one of those companies. They have made a surge protector in the shape of a cube- “the world’s smallest power socket.” This is the PowerCube. They have a few different models, and we’ll review two today.
Allocacoc PowerCube Extended USB
This is one of the PowerCube kits you can purchase. The big bonus about having your extension cord in cube form is that you will not have blocked outlets due to bulky plugs. Each plug will fit nicely around the cube. This cube contains 4 power outlets, 2 USB plug-ins, and either a 5 ft or 10 ft extension cord.
The USB is rated as 5V, 2.1A. So you could charge two phones at the same time, but only one tablet.
It comes in four different colors- Boston Red, Cobalt Blue, Trolley Grey, and Kelly Green. This can help you organize your PowerCubes if you use more than one. More on that later. In the box you also get a mounting dock so you could mount the cubes under your desk or wherever else. Also included is removable tape and CableFix.
This product is available for $29.95 on the Allocacoc website.
Allocacoc PowerCube/Extended Remote
This is another in the PowerCube family that mounts on any flat surface, but included in this pack is a remote. The remote sticks to a flat surface- usually at foot height, so you can use your foot to power the cube on or off. The benefit to having this remote sticking to a surface is so that you don’t lose it. The Sticky Pad on the remote is reusable, so go ahead and move it wherever you want. Best of all, the remote is battery free, so you don’t have to worry about having to run to the store to get new ones.
This PowerCube only comes in one color, but get this- you can connect PowerCubes together. This gives you even more outlets- which all can be controlled by one remote. You also can use multiple remotes to control one PowerCube- making it possible to separate each side into its own controls. Just make sure your entire load doesn’t exceed 15 amps. There is no surge supression, or anything that would protect your devices if you did fry them.
On this cube, there are four power outlets and an on/off button. The cord is 5 feet long on this one. You also get a docking system like the one above. Other PowerCubes are available for purchase that don’t come with cords, so if you want to stack PowerCubes, you only need one with a cord. Again, it’s not a good idea to overload these.
This PowerCube set is available for $39.95 on the website.
There is one other thing that I noticed about this product that I think is a downside. In order to return or exchange this product, you only get 30 days according to their website. Not only that, but it says “To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in the original packaging. Your item needs to have the receipt or proof of purchase.” I’m not sure what you would do if you opened the packaging and the item didn’t work. I think the company should probably address that. The packaging is extremely hard to open, and I suppose if you can figure out the puzzle, you could get it back in its packaging to perfection.
Overall, it’s a fun concept, and it’s a lot more portable than a surge protector.
