I think we all know that there is or sadly was a movement amongst console games to get gamers off the couch. Games like WiiSports, WiiFit, and others for the Wii and Playstation Move forced players to be active, but I don’t really see that much. Games like Halo 4 and other FPS games still encourage sitting down play, and standing actually messes me up. I have to admit that I am about ready to call the physically fit video games a failed experiment, but not just yet.

I have seen devices that really immerse the user into the game, such as the Oculus Rift. This soon-to-be Kickstarter project known as the Virtuix Omni is a virtual reality “treadmill” that allows your legs to take you places in the game.

As you can see in the video, you can play a game of Skyrim and feel like you have been walking around a mythical world. You will notice that it is ring shaped around the waist to hold you up while you can walk around.

Of course, there is more to this tech than just games. According to Virtuix’s website, it can also do “training and simulation, fitness and exercising, virtual tourism, virtual tradeshows and events, virtual meet-ups and multi-person adventures, virtual workplaces, virtual museums, physical therapy, VR architecture, VR concerts, etc.”

It also goes on to say that “Virtual reality is the future”. Didn’t we say that twenty years ago? Well, we’ll see how this one works. I’m not certain that the typical living room can accommodate the Virtuix Omni.
