This particular article makes me proud as I get to do it with my son Jayden, who has his own video channel of JaydenTFC (otherwise known as Jayden the Funnel Cake). He and I have been enjoying our new Nintendo Switch, and some of the more fun games from it such as Super Mario Odyssey and Smash Ultimate. We’ve also been playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but we got the Wii U version of that.
This has led me to wonder what could possibly be next for Nintendo. I recall writing an article years ago suggesting that Nintendo’s days could be numbered. Yes, Nintendo has had their ups and downs as a company. When the Super Nintendo came out, it was nearly killed in competition with the SEGA Genesis. By the time the GameCube surfaced, it was hit with stiff competition from Sony and Microsoft. After pulling themselves up with the Wii, the Wii U pulled Nintendo down.
The truth is these Switch games are so good, that they are almost too good. Breath of the Wild, while throwing out the traditional The Legend of Zelda formulae, has really made some great strides. I mean, the system of gathering has been spectacular, not to mention exploring the world. The only thing that I wish they had more of is more dungeon exploring, as the four Great Beasts were not much in this, but the Shrines just about made up for it.
As for Super Mario Odyssey, it is a huge quantum leap for Mario games, which had worked well with the 3D. Granted, Super Mario Galaxy was something, but Super Mario 3D really made the world of Mario feel more lifelike than ever. The way Odyssey was able to bring a city aspect with realistic people and Cappy really brought Nintendo’s mascot to level of greatness he has never had. I honestly can’t even think of a way that Super Mario Odyssey could improve.
As for Smash Ultimate, this has become an easy cash cow for Nintendo, and it is not hard to see why. Anytime you can bring all of these characters together like the Avengers, then why shouldn’t it succeed? I would imagine the only improvements could be more characters, more backgrounds, and anything else it wants to bring.
I’m guessing that the release dates for Super Mario Odyssey 2, the next Switch Zelda Game, and Smash game will be made more public. Until then, I can’t help but wonder if an attempt at improvement on these games might not be needed. In the meantime, here is a video I made with my son, and you should subscribe to his channel of JaydenTFC.
