Okay, if everything went right, you should be seeing a video of me two weeks ago at PAXPrime, when I first had a chance to try out the Oculus Rift.
If you don’t know what the Oculus Rift is, don’t feel too bad. I have written about it many times on this blog, and so if you just enter in “Oculus Rift” in the Search engine, you’ll find at least three articles about it this year. Go on, do it now.
After trying it out, I will honestly say that the Oculus Rift must be tried and not talked about. It really is the virtual reality system that we were promised.
I will have to say that putting this one makes you look like you are jacked into the eye-Matrix. It is a shoebox that you put on your head, and I had a chance to play a game known as Lucky Fox. I won’t talk much about the game, as it is a kind of Mario rip-off, complete with jumping on foes and collecting coins.
What is interesting is how I had to focus. At first, the game was blurry, and the person showing me the Oculus Rift just said “bring it closer to your eyes”. I then adjusted it like I was adjusting a pair of glasses, and I saw pure 3-D goodness.
After that, I was playing a game with a controller that I could not look down and see. It was embarrassing just grabbing for it. What made it interesting is in the game, I could turn my head, and I could see wonderful backgrounds.
Yes, you heard me right. I could see how the world looked inside of a video game, and it looked infinitely better than Tron.
Clearly, this is the way video games are heading, which is why I saw three other booths that had Oculus Rift games on display. Check it out after the jump.
One of them was Darknet, a game where you are hacking into computers, but they look like that weird interface that Keanu Reeves was hacking into in Johnny Mnemonic. I don’t think I really want to review that one on Speculative Fiction Saturday unless the world completely runs out of speculative fiction films. Needless to say, it has that vector graphics look that resembles Reassembly.
I found that Darknet was all about just going into hexagons and infecting them, but I was having trouble playing the demo as I couldn’t figure how how to go up, down, left, or right. After pushing every button on the controller, I realized what I was doing wrong: just turn my head. Seriously, Oculus Rift creates a new type of gameplay that could be hard to get used to. Check out more about the game Darknet here.
Then I saw a game known as Xing: The Land Beyond. This one I didn’t have a chance to try out with the Oculus Rift, but I wish that I had. Seriously, there was a line, but I wanted to see this game on the Oculus because I have been waiting years for something like this.
I mean, imagine if you could go into the world of Myst without all of the slides. This is a world that you can turn around and look and see the beauty of this world surrounding you. I so wish that I could go into this puzzle-solving game. Find out more about it here.
The last game that I want to talk about is called Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. In all honesty, I don’t really see a need for the Oculus Rift in this game, but it could be for any video game console.
The weird thing is that the video game aspect is only one element of the game. The Oculus Rift player is seeing a bomb, while his other friends have a plan for a bomb. Seriously, it is like an episode of 24, or some other movie where characters have to diffuse a bomb, somehow.
I might as well just put a video of this game to give you a better idea of it, but you can find out more about it here. Just prepare for an age of Virtual Reality with the Oculus Rift.
