LEGO The Hobbit Video Game, a personal review

February 13, 2015 By Techno_Mark Leave a Comment

Lego the HobbitWhen I say that this LEGO The Hobbit video game is a personal review, I mean that there is no way this will have a bias. You see, I love LEGO video games, and it is simply because I love LEGO. Yeah, I’ve written three books on the subject, so it holds a special place in my heart, honestly.

Here’s the biggest problem that a lot of people have with LEGO games: not only are they made for kids, but they use a graphics program that essentially makes the Lego world come to life. I kind of get the feeling that there is a very simple program that is pretty easy to make, relatively speaking. I mean, if you are looking for Destiny or Halo, this is not it.

LEGO The Hobbit is similar to the LEGO Lord of the Rings game that I reviewed two years ago. The game allows you to play a character from the film, and then go through some scene in the film as well. What makes this different from LEGO LOTR is the complete Hobbit trilogy is not in the game. The first two movies, An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug are involved, and I am told that the third film will be available to play as DLC later. The problem is, no one seems to know when that is.

Anyway, LEGO The Hobbit has similar gameplay to LEGO LOTR, as not only do you go through levels, but you need to get items and forge them out of Mithral bricks to get some interesting side-quests. Now here is what makes it interesting: the game allows you to build stuff as you pick up materials. It appears that there is a page taken from the Minecraft playbook here. What is funny is how you can build stuff using these materials, and then play this game where you identify pieces for studs money. Yeah, you can get rich that way.

So far, I like the game better than the Hobbit trilogy. Oh yeah, you knew that one was coming. The graphics look a lot better, and I think with every LEGO game, the company advances their graphics a little more.

There is one complaint that I have, and this is the problems with the characters. There are way too many, and each one has a special ability. Some have axes, one has a huge hammer, and another one has a flail. It is easy to get them mixed up, and if you can actually get all their names, more power to you.

Right now, you can get LEGO The Hobbit for a very low price on all consoles. I’ve no idea when the 2nd one will happen, but I’ll be reviewing the Lego Batman 3 game soon.
