Okay, you know how much that I like reviewing video games, and I had a chance to try out Project Root by OPQAM. I will have to say that this game is addictive, awesome, and old-school meets the modern age of gaming.
Project Root is a video game that doesn’t need a complex backstory, but it has one. In all honesty, I don’t really even care but it involves some evil corporation named Prometheus who has taken over all of the energy. It is up to a rebel group to stop him, and this can only be done with one small craft against an entire army.
The gameplay reminds me of Xevious, which is a vertical scrolling shooter where you shot enemies like tanks and planes with guns and bombs, respectively. Project Root has you shoot all kinds of enemies, and they are trying to kill you as well.
This game involves clutching the corner bumpers to shoot, and I just kept my fingers there, because this game involves constant shooting because everything is trying to kill you. Like most old-school video games, you have three lives, but they go quickly. If this was a stand-up arcade game, I would have wasted a lot of quarters.
Seriously, I haven’t been able to make it through the first level yet, but I am not certain if there are other levels. This is some open world exploration going on here, and I found this works against the game. This made the objectives that I was supposed to destroy harder to find, but I think that is the strategy that has to happen here. I will have to say that when you use these missiles, it is terrific. Use them while you can.
The game is very satisfying and it was such a rush. Even though I couldn’t get very far, it was fun to just keep playing over and over again. I will have to say that my hands were really hurting after it was over, but I still wanted to play. That is the sign of a great video game, and that is what Project Root has accomplished.
