Apple announces the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALike we mentioned yesterday with Google’s big announcement, we knew that Apple was going to announce something. In fact, most news outlets had already received word about what it was: the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.

Let me start by saying that I didn’t hear much about the iPad Mini 3. I think it is just the same size with a few upgrades. Apple spent a lot more time talking about the iPad Air 2.

This new version is very thin at just 6.1 mm. In fact, you could stack two of them and they would not be as thick as the original iPad. On the inside, the iPad Air 2 has an A8X chip, and is 12 times as fast as the original iPad. It has 10 hours worth of battery life, and includes an 8 Megapixel iSight camera with a f/2.4 aperature, capable of 1080p video. Then there is another update: a TouchID fingerprint sensor, which was predicted as a new feature.

The iPad Air 2 should be available soon with $499 for the 16GB, $599 for the 64GB, and $699 for the 128GB. The iPad mini 3 is $529, $629, and $729 respectively.

Another big reveal was a 27-inch Retina screen for the iMac. The resolution is 5,120 x 2,880, which is 67 percent more pixels than 4K.

I may have been too pre-mature on my report of Bendgate

Okay, I’m going to make a disclaimer. Generally, I do my postings a day early so they can post early the next day. Unless there is some sort of “big story” breaking, like the recent unveiling of the iPhone 6.

I guess I got ahead of myself with my report on the iPhone 6 bending. As it turns out, this is a problem that has only affected 9 phones, according to my Source. I believe that 10 million of these smartphones have been sold.

I believe that 9 individual phones out of 10 million is pretty good. I don’t really see this as a problem, but some sort of thing that just makes its way around. Let’s hope I don’t hear more about this. I was tired of hearing about the iPhone 4’s problem.

Say, does the iPhone 6 have a bending problem?

iphone 6 bendA few years ago, when the iPhone 4 came out, there was that design flaw that would power the phone down when you put your finger on a certain point on its side. It would appear that there is a new Applegate.

I’m not certain if you have already heard about this, but the iPhone 6 is having a problem staying straight. Have you ever kept your phone in your front pocket? Well, keeping it that way will bend it. In fact, there are videos floating around of people who bend the iPhone 6 with their bare hands.

So what have we learned here? Get your iPhone 6 a case, darn it. Seriously, I believe that this is the only thing we can learn.

The iPod Classic says Good-bye

ipod Classic“One life ends, another begins”. Yeah, I took that from Avatar, and I definitely think that it applies to Apple. I’m guessing that the company made one of their big announcements ever with the Apple Watch.

Lest we forget that Apple was having its own troubles, but much of that changed when the iPod hit the market. Remember how this invention changed…everything? Yeah, that clicker wheel really changed everything, but it is now just a nostalgic thing of the last decade.

Whenever Apple makes a big announcement, they shut down the Apple store. When it came up again, the availability of the iPod Classic was no more. Granted, the Shuffle, nano, and Touch are still here.

I never do really like when an era comes to an end, and I can’t help but wonder if the iPad mini is next. I mean, that iPhone 6 Plus is pretty big.

What Apple announced today

iPhone 6We all knew that Apple was going to announce something big today on September 9th, and we thought it was going to be the new iPhone and the iWatch. So what did they announce? It started off with Apple saying they had lots of products (plural) to report, and while they had a new smartphone and smartwatch, it was not quite what expected.

Apple began with the new version of the iPhone, which is actually two versions with the iPhone 6 (4.7 inch display) and the iPhone 6 Plus (5.5 inch display). These are pretty thin at 6.9mm for the 6, and 7.1 mm for the Plus. There are curves around the side, which is an entirely new design. Each have a new generation A8 chip, a next generation Retina display.

Besides the difference in size, the iPhone 6 Plus has a landscape mode. If you double-touch the Touch ID, stuff moves to the lower half of the screen. To tap it again will move things to a full-screen mode.

As for the battery life, it is 14 hours of 3G talk time for the iPhone 6, and 24 hours for the iPhone 6 Plus. As for the standby, it has 10 days for the 6 and 16 days for the Plus. The video time for the 6 is 11 hours, and 14 hours for the Plus. There is some kind of new sensor, which can estimate distance and has a barometer too. Both of these two phones will have WiFi calling, and there is a New improved FaceTime HD that Apple states: “your kids are going to do that”.

So what about the camera? There is an 8 Megapixel iSight camera, with Panorama with 43 MP. The video has 1080p at 30 fps or 60 fps, up to 120fps on the 5S, which makes them both capable of super slo-mo.

As for the price, the iPhone 6 is on $199 or $399 for the largest model. It starts with 16GB and goes to 64GB, all the way up to 128GB. As for the iPhone 6 Plus, it starts at $299. It will ship on September 19th.

After unveiling the new version of the iPhone, the gears shifted to a new software, an Apple payment system known as Apple Pay. Apparently, you use it by holding the user’s thumb on the TouchID button, and it is on both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. As the presentation says, “Cashier doesn’t see your card number” and “Apple doesn’t know how much you paid for it”. This could easily change the way iPhone users pay, and I’m certain that this will change the way smartphone users will pay.

Then the gears shifted again with a “One more thing”. Apple knew people would be looking forward to it, and it had some huge buildup. This is the Apple Watch, and you will note that the “i” is missing. The Apple Watch is stainless steel with a sapphire screen with a dial on the side known as the Digital Crown, and it got thunderous applause with standing ovation.

Apple says this is “the most personal device we’ve ever created”. It has an incredible new operating system/interface. It can sense what you’re doing on the wrist, and it has a gyroscope and accelerometer. It has six different straps and can make those straps interchangeable. Then there is the feature like Glances, to swipe up from the bottom to see meetings, weather, stocks, or music. It is a comprehensive health and fitness device.

Okay, I’m not going to say more about Apple’s new smartwatch, because I will talk about it more on Smartwatch Reviews. I can’t honestly analyze Apple’s this move without using the word “takeover”. Not only do they have a smartphone which could easily become number one, but their Apple Pay can change how smartphones could pay. I’m probably going to write about that later.

The Apple Watch is easily a huge play on the company to reign the smartwatch industry. Just like they created the ultimate smartphone and tablet.

Oh Apple, what will you do next?

Apple to Samsung: Copy this, please!

Apple to SamsungI think we all know that Apple and Samsung are kind of like Frememies. I believe that Apple is always suing Samsung for stealing their ideas, and I can’t honestly give an unbiased view here. After all, practically every smartphone (not just the ones that Samsung makes) looks just like the iPhone since its release in 2007.

As you can see in this image here, Apple took out a full-page ad in a newspaper saying that they want other companies to copy them. Provided that what they are copying is making greener technology. Shoot, since it’s around Earth Day, I suppose we could all just get on board with that.

My Source believes that this ad is targeted specifically at Samsung, and I guess I’m going to have to agree with that. I am wondering if Samsung has the right to sue for slander or libel on this one. This could take the legal battle that they have been fighting one more step further, or behind.

Sony planning a film about Steve Jobs?

steve-jobs-photo-first-iPhone-15-sizedI’m sure anyone who reads my Speculative Fiction Saturday posts knows that I really can’t stand the lack of originality in Hollywood. I have just heard that there is going to be a movie about Steve Jobs.

Yes, you have heard this before. In fact, Ashton Kutcher was just in a film called Jobs, that apparently didn’t do so well. Before that film came out, you could watch iSteve for free with Justin Long. Personally, I think we have had way too many films about Steve Jobs.

Then there is this weird factoid. This new Steve Jobs film was written by Aaron Sorkin, who also wrote The Social Network film about Mark Zuckerberg. Then there is a plan for it to be directed by David Fincher, who also directed The Social Network.

Okay, why do we need another Steve Jobs movie, especially with this creative team who already gave us The Social Network? I get this terrible feeling of deja vu, or a studio trying to bank on something that they think will surely be a hit. I haven’t heard who is playing Jobs yet, but I’m sure it will be some box office draw.

Mobee Products, Part 2: The Magic Feet and Magic Numpad

MagicFeetMain-2Well, this is our second round for reviewing Mobee products, and I am pleased to review two other items that have their “Magic” label on them.

I will start with the Magic Feet, and it is designed to charge both the Apple Magic Mouse and the Wireless Keyboard (or Apple Magic Trackpad) simultaneously. It has an interesting design with a shape that I am having a hard time describing. Basically, you slide in the Wireless keyboard or Magic Trackpad, and it will charge it so you don’t have to worry about running out of AA batteries. Now it takes 10 hours for a full charge, but that is good for about 10 days.

As I said before, it can also charge the Magic Mouse. It uses the same system that I described in my Part 1 of this Mobee series with the Magic Charger. This means that the Magic Foot can charge the Magic Juice.

In addition to the charging capability, the Magic Feet has four USB port in case you need them. As someone who constantly runs out of USB ports, I know that I need them. All in all, the Magic feet is one handy device for Apple owners, and it can be purchased on the Mobee site for about $149.90.

MagicNumpadMain-1The next product that I had a chance to try out is the Magic Numpad. It is definitely designed to be used after you charged the Magic Trackpad with your Magic Feet!

The Magic Numpad is “the first numeric touch application for Apple’s Magic Trackpad”, which essentially means it is a filmy cover that you can put over the Trackpad, turning it into a numeric pad. It comes in three forms: The Classic Numpad plus Trackpad Area, the Full Numpad, and the Numpad plus Customizable keys. To use any one of the three, all you need to do is download and register the included software, and you are good to go. You can get the Magic Numpad on the Mobee site for about $29.90.

Well, this concludes the Mobee series, and this would be a good gift for Apple lovers if this is what are thinking.

Apple create a controller for Games and TV?

irng987adfaIt seems like I am always hearing rumors about what Apple is doing, but I am pretty certain that the smart watch thing is probably true, maybe. So today, I present not one, but two rumors about Apple.

The first is that they could be in the TV business, or at least the TV controller. This is why they are supposedly developing this “iRing”. The iRing is meant to be a navigation pointer for the “iTV”, which I have heard absolutely zilch about.

I believe that this iTV will make use of some hardware known as mini iTV which will work like a second screen while watching TV. I think that this second screen could be the latest, but we will have to see on that.

We’ll also have some reports at the Game Developers Conference that Apple was having some secret meetings to discuss a game controller. Is Apple working on a new console, or just a controller for iDevices?

Ah, who knows when it comes to Apple rumors?
