Paper airplanes get a smartphone treatment with PowerUp 3.0

paper airplaneI don’t know about you, but I always liked paper airplanes. I got pretty bored with them, because as good as a paper airplane is, it will never be like a real airplane.

Now here comes the PowerUp 3.0. It has a device with a Smart Module, which has a small propeller and rudder that you can put on your plane for some extra oomph in your flight. Now I don’t know whether or not this can make a paper airplane fly like a toy model airplane, but it certainly sounds better than a good throwing arm, my Source does say that the plane can keep going for about 10 minutes, provided the Smart Module is fully charged.

The Smart Module works via Bluetooth, and you can control the paper airplane via iOS app. According to my Source, there is all kinds of cool controls like those of a real airplane like “a thrust indicator, range indicator, magnetic compass, artificial horizon, and a lever for ascending and descending. Tilting your iOS device to the right or left controls the steering”.

This PowerUp 3.0 was apparently a crowdfunded project that recently met its $50,000 funding goal. It is now available for about $40.


The Aeroscraft has taken off

AerosWhat you are seeing here is the Aeroscraft, and it is essentially a huge airship that is not a blimp. Seriously? That’s not a blimp? Nope. Blimps need all that helium to maintain their shape, but the Aeroscraft has a rigid structure.

Have you seen how blimps need propellers to have some propulsion? Well, the Aeroscraft doesn’t need that, as it has some helium power. This Pelican, as the ship is called, cost $35 million to make, with some funding from NASA. Believe it or not, this actually isn’t the craft Aeros wants to make, but the one they want to make will be 400 feet long. This one is about 266 feet long and 97 feet wide.

Why have one of these rigid airships? To move cargo, of course, and this could possibly move 66 tons or more. You don’t really want to move loads that heavy with planes, do you? Just think of all the runway space that is wasted, but the Aeroscraft could remove the need for a runway.

I say why not? Perhaps this could replace big rigs on the road. Okay, that might be a little too much to hope for.


Is the Terrafugia TF-X the future of flying cars?

tfx-terrafugiaI’m not certain if you have heard of the Terrafugia Transition, but it is essentially a car and a plane all in one. You would need a runway for that auto/plane, but for this new TF-X, it could begin a new age of flying cars.

You will notice that this car is really set up for VTOL (Vertical Take-off and Landings), which means that you could theoretically land it anywhere. Not only does this car have the ability of easy flight, but it has a fully automated flight program.

That’s right, this particular craft has the ability to fly itself. This would certainly give some comfort in an age of flying cars, as I’m not certain how I would feel if all these people got quick pilot’s licenses. Yeah, perhaps this is why we don’t have swarms of flying cars like in Back to the Future II, yet.

Oh, did I mention that this car/flying machine is both gas and electric power? It is. Now all I wonder is if this is the future.


Virgin Galactic SS2 makes first successful test flight

ss2tstflght897adfaklWhat you are seeing is Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo, or SS2, which completed its first test flight today.

Sir Richard Branson is certainly pleased as can be, and the SS2 took off at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. A carrier craft known as WhiteKinightTwo towed it 47,000 feet into the atmosphere and then the rockets kicked in to go faster than the speed of sound. It reached a height of 55,000 feet before came to a landing that was not a splashdown.

So, I suppose that we are on the way to space tourism, which is of course the end goal here. I don’t know how long it will take for all of us to have access to the expensive world of space travel, but Virgin Galactic predicts in 2015.
