Our Review of the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock

October 17, 2020 By Techno_Mark Leave a Comment

I had so much fun with the August Smart Lock Pro, and it has been a fine feature on my front door for the past few months. We didn’t really do a video review of that, and honestly, we had to really piece the one together that you are going to see below with new editing and new shooting room and…just watch it.

If you are not familiar with a smart lock, then you should know it is a cool apparatus that you can put on your deadbolt and operate it with your smartphone. The obvious plus is that you can lock and unlock your deadbolted front door with just your smartphone, and I am told that it will work with a smartwatch as well.

The Wi-Fi Smart Lock is essentially that Smart Lock Pro that I reviewed before, but it is smaller and it doesn’t have a Wi-Fi bridge. For those that don’t know, a Wi-Fi bridge is this plug that you had to put into the nearest outlet in order to use it. I’m guessing that it helps with the Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi Connection.

I really had no complaints about the Smart Lock Pro, as it never really failed me. There were times when it said that the lock would jam, but it never really did. There was also this one time when I got home, and discovered that my phone’s battery died.

As for the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, I had a little trouble with the installation. It had me open and shut the door in order to calibrate the thing, but this was a certain mode that you could always refuse. We had to do a factory reset just to get it off that mode, and we were able to get it to open and shut at the touch of a smartphone screen.

I also had a little trouble when getting people invited to use the lock. I had an issue with my daughter who has an iPhone and the rest of the family has Android ones.

I think that I talked in my last review of an August product about the difficulty I had when it came to that installation process. I mentioned how you have to use their included strip of tape on the outer lock (where you put the key) and then screw on this holder thing. Then the device itself has these claw-holder things to keep it on there, but the little claws wouldn’t hold on…yeah, it really is difficult to describe this. I think I made it clearer in the video, and you’re probably just going to watch that, right?

So, there are a lot of great features such as Auto-Lock, which will secure the front door once it is closed for a specific period of time, so you don’t have to worry if you left your door unlocked. Also, there is the auto-unlock feature that will detect when you get home and unlock the door to let you in.

There is also a feature of doing a guest pass for certain amounts of times, and the app gives you the activity feed to see who is locking and unlocking the door.

You should be able to purchase the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock on the August site for about $249.99.
