For 40 years, Ohio Art has been marketing a well-known product known as Etch A Sketch. This is one toy that has withstood the test of time, even though most computers have a Paint program that is more advanced and far easier to use.
After all, having two knobs was just a real pain! One goes left and right, and the other goes up and down. If you wanted curvy lines, then you had better make certain that your knob twisting hands are in sync.
I suppose it took long enough, but Ohio Art finally made a knob-less Etch a Sketch. Apparently, it uses a joystick like control for this. This will make it easier to do the mazes and traceable pictures that are downloadable from the Etch A Sketch website.
Sure, most of us use iPods and iPhones, and they do run out of power at terrible times, don’t they? Griffin has a solution to this dilemma with two products, the Power Duo Reserve and the iTrip Auto.
The Power Duo Reserve is just a back-up battery that can connect to an outlet of a car’s dash lighter. Once you charge it up, you can connect it to your iPod and iPhone whenever you need some extra power. As for the iTrip Auto, this is designed to connect to the car’s in-dash lighter so it can sync wirelessly with your car’s stereo.
I had a chance to try them out, and they are some pretty terrific products. You can read the full review here.
This product is probably best used in the summer, but I will have to admit that I have never really seen anything like it before.
The Aquapod has the amazing ability to launch a 2-liter bottle about 100 feet in the air. All you need to do is fill it up about one-third full, put it on the orange stand, pump the stand full of air, and launch!
Nothing like a product like this to bring out a kid in you. If you get it for your kids, you had better make certain they have adult supervision when they play with it.
Yes, there are a lot of MP3 players out there, and you don’t have to buy the ones with an “i” in front of them.
Take the Sandisk Sansa Clip Plus, for example. I had a chance to try out this tiny MP3 Player with a SD card slot, FM tuner, and voice recorder, and it is pretty decent.
I don’t know if you have heard of Project Natal, but it debuted at the big E3 gaming convention at LA last year. It is a something that could easily kick the Wii’s Motion-controlling butt out the door. There is a video of it after the jump, but it essentially is a motion sensor that can make the entire body one big controller. It also uses vocal recognition and scanning for a whole lot of fun. It makes me want to up and buy an Xbox 360 right now.
Ever been to Space Mountain at Disney World? Well, they are putting something new in the lines to help those who wait. Video games. Read about it here.
Here’s a Concept Projector with a Screen from Optoma.
There is a new camera called the Casio EX-FS10 which can actually improve your golf game.
I believe that I previously discussed the Readius. It looks like it will be made after all by a company called Wistron.
This here is a new phone that can separate its keyboard from its display. It is the Fujitsu F-04B.
The Chumby One goes on sale today for $99. If you haven’t heard of it, you should have.
I like air hockey as much as the next guy, but I just don’t have the space in my place for one of those gargantuan air hockey tables. I suppose that all the space is necessary for all the air to rush up and reduce the coefficient of friction, but all that really needs to slide is the puck.
This Portable Air Hockey kit from urban outfitters is just the thing I am looking for. It comes with the two “hockey bats”, plus a special puck. This puck takes two AAA batteries to make it “hover”. Of course you realize that this puck will slide off the table, so you might want to block the edges somehow.
However, it is only $14, so that might be worth purchasing. You can buy it here.
I’ve recently had the chance to try out three phones from Motorola, and the Clutch, or i465, is the first. This messaging phone has a full QWERTY keyboard and some other features, but it by no means, a smartphone. It isn’t a dumb phone, either.
I’ll start with this one. Need a “swear jar” in your home. You might want to get this Ceramic Swear Bank.
Ever had to sleep at an airport, someone is developing some concept technology that is aptly named the Sleep Box.
Like that Cars movie? How would you like to have one of those Cars cars let you know when you have email. Exactly the focus of the Disney/Pixar Cars Email Alert.
I’m sure most of you know that I get most of my news from other sources. Some I look for, and some come to me. Yesterday, I received an email that informed me that the Vanguard news show was doing a news special called “Porn 2.0″. I’m not certain how I got on this person’s email recommendation list, but I decided to watch the news special. This would probably the first time that I mentioned porn on this website. The special talked a lot about how technology has changed the porn industry.
Now, this is the point in which I could get all preachy about porn, but honestly, you have heard it before. I believe that one of the missions of any reporter is to be a “fly on a wall”, and that you simply tell the world what you see. Therefore, Vanguard reported the porn industry just like it would any other business. Clearly, it wasn’t like how Christians would have reported on it.
Remember how Kip had the bumpers on when he was bowling in Napoleon Dynamite? If he had this remote controlled bowling ball from 900 Global, then he wouldn’t have needed them.
Yes, I’m certain that we all have wanted a remote control bowling ball, but not because we wanted to cheat. No, this is for the good of science. I’m actually surprised that someone could create a rolling object that could steer like this.
There is a video here after the jump if you want to see it in action, and this rolling ball is surprisingly accurate.
The show V finally got around to starting very late in the fall season, but it is worth the wait. I’m sure this shows my age, but I actually remember watching the original mini-series back in 1983. I was in sixth grade at the time, and back then, no one had ever attempted a science-fiction mini-series like it.
The premise was an alien invasion, which has been done to death, even by the 1980s. V took an interesting twist on it, because the aliens didn’t just show up in their big motherships and tiny shuttles and proceed to eradicate humanity. No, the aliens on V decided on a different approach: pretend to be humanity’s friend, and then stab them in the back.
I had a chance to try out two of Belkin’s products this weekend, the CushDesk and the Universal Media Reader. The Cushdesk is essentially a laptop rest for your lap, and it is about as technical as a crowbar. It says on the package Ease, Comfort, and Cool, and as Stan Lee would say: “‘Nuff Said”.
As for the Universal Media Reader, I had a little bit of a harder time getting it to work. It also had some things with it that I wouldn’t call design flaws, but I probably wouldn’t have designed it that way.
Anyway, you can read my full review on the products here.
Here’s one of the most intriguing methods of computer interface that I have ever seen. Say hello to the Infractor.
Here is an interesting iPhone app called the Cry Translator. Believe it or not, it can supposedly translate your baby’s cry so you will know his or her needs.
Here’s a mini-projector from Japan called the Toyjector.
Found this interesting device from Sungale called the Smart Info Engine that is kind of an e-reader PMP, for lack of a better word.
Here is the second contest that we are doing here at TheGeekChurch. This time, we are giving away a Powermat, a device that you can read about here for more information. You can watch the video above for the rules, or you can read the official rules after the jump.
I’ve been reviewing a lot of Sharper Image products of late, and several of them have been designed for the iPod or MP3 Player. This one is designed to be used in the bathroom. Actually, it comes in two parts. The dock for the MP3 player stays in one room and transmits to the mirror speaker in another room. The mirror is waterproof, so it keeps the user’s MP3 Player safe. I had a chance to try it out for myself, and you can read my review of its ups and downs here.
Take a gander at this home projector. It is a little different than most projectors that you see, because it isn’t horrendously expensive. Granted, it is only set up to connect with a DVD player or video game system with it, but it is quite easy to use. It even has a nice remote control for volume, contrast, and color.
Supposedly, it is designed to work from six feet away, and is good for a projection of…90 inches! Seems a little big of a diagonal to me, and I tried it out. You can read about this experience here.
Here is a gadget for all those who need an iPod dock, a card reader, and two extra USB ports by their computer. This is the Simpifi, and it is designed to simplify your life! Yes, that is a deliberately poor pun, but I had a chance to try it out, and it works really well. You can read an extended review here.
This one is not a concept device. The PrintBrush allows the user to print a document by swiping it on paper or cloth. You have to see it to believe it.
Some of you may not have ever heard of the Tapster, and you may never see it, either. This device has been abandoned by Philips, as it cannot work.
The ADE 651 is a device that the Iraqi military has invested a lot in. We’re talking about a purchase order of 1,500 individual devices that cost about $16,500 to $60,000 each. These devices can detect bombs, guns, drugs, and human bodies from up to a kilometer away.
Sound too good to be true? According to the U.S. military, it is! Head of the National Explosive Engineering Sciences Security Center at Sandia Labs, Dale Murray, says that he “tested several devices in this category, and none have ever performed better than random chance”.
The company ATSC, which makes the ADE 651, has refused to talk to the New York Times about this, which is not a good sign.
